REQUIREMENTS

These are the things everyone is responsible for completing…

Weekly Requirements

Happy February 6 friends, I hope you had a splendid weekend. If you’ve checked Basecamp, you know that the VistaPLA Site (where you post your DPUs) is still down, so your job is to publish your DPU, as prompted, in Basecamp. The instructions were included, and though it’s super simple, you should seek help if you’re unsure how.

This week, you’re going to complete the following:

  1. Publish your DPU
    • Remember that starting this week, we will ALWAYS publish our DPUs on Mondays.
  2. Continue exploring your content area
  3. Weekly Conference
    • You received an email (sorry, Google calendar sends email confirmations, not Basecamp messages) with your new group, day and time. Please come prepared to discuss what you’ve learned about your content area so far.

PLEASE REMEMBER:

As a capable, respected member of this learning community, you are expected to get right to work. If you don’t understand something, your process should look something like this…

  1. Go back to the online resources here in The Narrows that might help you understand what you’re confused about. Read/watch/take notes with the intention of understanding.
    • Please don’t expect others to help you if you haven’t first done your best to figure things out on your own.
    • As the Swedish proverb suggests, “The best place to find a helping hand is at the end of your own arm.”
  2. Find a class-mate who knows how to do what you’re unsure about, and ask them for help.
    • *IF* you are the person someone asks for help, and you provide that help, please ping me on Basecamp and let me know exactly how you served your classmate(s). As you surely recall, in The Narrows, we value service to others.
  3. If you’re still confused, please see the Guide.
    • The Guide is here to help, but he’s not here as a crutch. If he bails you out by answering every question you have (questions that you should know the answers to already), he’s doing you a disservice. He’s teaching you that you’re not capable of taking control of your own learning. And you are. So he’ll expect you to behave accordingly, and he’ll only help when he see’s that you’re truly struggling to improve yourself, and to do the very hard work that learning and growing require.

Your required tasks are below.

PUBLISH YOUR DPU

Below are a few reminders about your DPU

  • Remember to read the DPU Tutorial to get super clear on what is expected in each section.
  • One quick comparison I’ve used with a few students that I’ll put out there for everyone. If you were, say, a photographer and you wanted someone to hire you to take pictures at their wedding, it’s highly likely you’d have a website that displays a portfolio of some of the work you’ve done. This portfolio would help this soon-to-be client see what you’re capable of and know that they could trust you with the work. That’s the point of these DPUs. They should give me a VERY good sense for what you’ve done, what you’ve learned, how you’ve used your time to grow and improve. Keep it in mind.
  • As you surely read in Basecamp this morning, the VPLA site is probably still down. Check it, and if so, please post your DPU within Basecamp by responding to the message you received about remembering to complete your DPU.
  • When you have published your DPU, you should claim credit for it by going to the Co-Op, finding the link for the Weekly DPU in the “Earned Income” section, and buying it. You may ONLY claim credit for it up until the end of class on Monday. Otherwise, you miss the opportunity. Claiming it late will result in penalties.

YOUR WEEKLY CONFERENCE (*IF* today is your day)

Happy Friday Visitor, it’s always nice to reach the end of a trail, don’t you think? Well, almost the end…plenty of hiking yet to do today. Your required tasks are listed below.

OPTIONAL

These are the extra things you may choose to do throughout the week if you like.

The following are things you may choose to do for additional miles (MI) as well as capital (C) – not to mention to grow and learn and become better. Sometimes these optional items will relate directly to the work you’re doing, other times they will be random. Either way, they represent things the Guide feels are worth your time. As always, though, the required items above are the priority. Feel free to do these on your own time as well.
