Community Research

Tuesday 3/20/18 thru Thursday 3/22/18

Today’s Objective(s): SWBAT

  1. Properly assess the credibility of a source
  2. Complete a proper text analysis
  3. Identify and discuss the HR issues present in our community

Do Now – 5 minutes

  1. Computers on desks and logged in
  2. Access the Article Analysis tool you were provided
  3. Share with your table group the names of the articles you are working on to ensure nobody is working on the same one

LESSON – 50 minutes

For most of this week, you’re working independently to explore current events related to the human rights your table group was assigned. Just a few points of clarification and requirements to keep in mind…

  1. You are looking for news articles that connect one or more of the 3 human rights you were assigned to your community. That community can be VHS, Vista, San Diego, California, the US, etc. It should NOT relate to something like “UC San Diego” or some other specific place that is in your community, but which you are not a part of.
  2. You must assess the source for credibility based on this document about assessing source credibility.
  3. You are responsible for completing 2 Article Analysis forms, which means you need to find 2 current event news articles about 1 or more of your human rights.
  4. You must check with the other people at your table to ensure you are not working on the same article. There can be NO DUPLICATES. If 2 people turn in the same article, you will BOTH have to redo the work.
  5. Your articles must be less than 1 year old

Please remember that the purpose of this work is to develop a deeper understanding of the human rights issues in our community so that we can complete our challenge –

Create a Universal Declaration of Human Rights that addresses the modern human rights issues in our community

Finally, we’ll be sharing the results of our research later in the week, so please be prepared to discuss your findings. This is not a race or something to just check off the list. Do the work with the intention of learning deeply about these issues.

Closing – 5 minutes

We’ll begin sharing out your article analysis work by asking a few people to discuss their learning
