Do Now – 10 minutes

Wednesday

  1. Computers on and logged in to GNG Connect
  2. Post community pictures in the #EverydayLife section. Be sure to include a clear description of what it is and why you’re including it.

Thursday

  1. Notebooks out, open to page 30. Take 5 minutes to write a brief summary of yesterday’s article about the Skeikh’s plan to change how people talk about people with disabilities. Just try to capture the main ideas in your summary
  2. On page 31, please create the template that you see projected up front

Lesson 3

Wednesday:
Today’s work is about exploring how different language and images used by the media impacts the stories being told. We’ll have a chance to consider biasPrejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair. (Google Def) and how media bias impacts us.

We’ll read an article about “People of Determination” and use it as a vehicle to discuss these important issues, considering such questions as…

  1. What is Sheik Mohammed trying to do? Why?
  2. Why does changing the language matter?
  3. What is the diff b/t the term ‘disabled’ and POD in meaning?
  4. How does the nature of the story change by using this word?

Thursday:
Now that we’ve seen the power of language, let’s apply what we know to a different article. Specifically, let’s look at a recent news story connected to immigration in California. We’ll read the story together, as we did yesterday. When we’re done, we’ll write a quick summary of the article to ensure we all understood what we read.

What are some alternative terms we could use to describe illegal immigrants that are similar in spirit to the term “People of Determination” (Think about why people move from one country to another)? What language could we use instead that might change the nature of their story? How about other words in the story?

Working in your table groups, find 3 terms in the article that you think could be changed to a different word in order to make the message more positive. You’ll write the 3 words, as well as the words you want to replace them with, on page 31 of your notebooks.

Then, you’ll write the new sentences that these word replacements created. We’ll explore an example together.

Closing – 5 minutes

We’ll finish by taking turns sharing our word choices and new sentences

Homework

You have a bit of homework over the break, actually. It’s listed below but will be fully explained in a Basecamp post as well.

  1. Take a picture of your community and post it, along with a full description, in the #EverydayLife section of GNG Connect
  2. Check the #EverydayLife section at least a couple times between now and the Monday we return and if you see any posts by our partners, respond with a COMPLETE question (details on what a complete question is will be in the Basecamp post)
  3. Check the Group Forums section at least a few times over the break and read any posts by our partners. Either new posts by them or comments/questions they add as replies to your posts. In either case, respond with a COMPLETE question. Remember, the goal is interaction and engagement.
  4. Talk to an elder in your family or community (for example, parent or guardian, grandparent, community, or religious leader) and ask them the following:
    • Can you tell me a story from when you were my age?
    • What were your community and culture like then? How is it the same and different from the community and culture in which I am growing up?
    • How did people from other countries learn about each other without the internet and social media? Did you ever have a friend from another part of the world? What was it like?
    • You must write down the elder’s story and take a photo of him/her/them, and bring both to class upon our return from break.

Unit Objectives

We’re between units at the moment, and will be until after Spring break. However, that doesn’t mean we have no goals for the next 2 weeks. Our priorities include the following:

  • Debrief our recent project in order to spend some time considering what went well and how we might improve on our work
  • Familiarize ourselves with the Global Nomads Campfire program
  • Gain some background knowledge about our partner classroom’s country/culture
  • Start the Campfire program
